History of Monroe County, MI.

Monroe County, Michigan is Michigan's most south eastern County, and is Michigan's only port on Lake Erie. It is situated directly between Detroit to the north and Toledo, Ohio to the south, with proximity to other cities like Ann Arbor, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario.

Monroe County is characterized by urban and industrial development along its eastern shoreline, and agriculture in its western sector. It has two coal-fired power plants, and one nuclear power plant. The lakeshore offers many fishing and boating opportunities, and harbors North America's only International Wildlife Refuge.

Lake Erie Metropark - Offering 3 miles of Lake Erie shoreline, boat launch, 18 hole golf course, wave pool, groomed cross country ski trails, nature center and more. 

Sterling State Park - Offers a swimming beach that has over one mile of Lake Erie shoreline, full service campground, 6 miles of cross country ski trails, fishing and boat ramps.

Flat Rock Speedway - Located just a few miles north of the community, the Speedway offers a 1/4 mile oval track with racing every weekend, including the figure 8 races and School Bus Figure 8 race in the fall.

Point Mouillee State Game Area -  Offers 4,000 acres of public hunting areas, hiking trails, marshes, fishing and a boat launch on Lake Erie.

• Lilac Golf Course - located on Armstrong Road about 5 minutes east of the community. This is an 18 hole course.
• Old Town Golf & Sportland - located on Monroe Street about 5 minutes south of the community. Old Town has a Par 3 golf Course, Driving Range, Putt Putt, and Batting Cages and the newest craze FootGolf! FootGolf is the combination of soccer and golf! This place has activities for the whole family!
