Culture
Live theater is very much a part of the community at Osceola Center for the Arts. Located midway between St. Cloud and Kissimmee, “The Center” is active year-round with a Broadway series which offers popular Broadway hits and musicals, concerts, lectures and monthly art exhibits featuring local artists, visiting guest artists as well as juried art shows.
The Osceola Center Orchestra and Singers offer concerts at The Center and about the community. The Center serves the artistic community with classes and training in art, drama, dance, photography and pottery. The annual “Christmas Craft and Art” exhibit is a must for creative viewing and Christmas gift giving. St. Cloud and area, as a community, enjoys a unique heritage of “small town life” events that define the character of the area.
These events have traditions which are honored year after year and continue to build themselves into the fabric of St. Cloud. Children grow up with the Christmas Parade, Lakefront 4th of July Celebration, City Christmas Tree Lighting, Downtown Business Group Halloween Night, Oktobert Fest/Fall Festival, Annual Downtown Christmas Craft Show, St. Cloud Life Expo and Extravaganza, Smoke ‘n Blues BBQ Competition, Rotary’s Spring Fling and Harmony’s Dark Sky viewing. The way each of these events contributes to the celebration of community makes an indelible stamp on children and adults that one carries through life. The sense of place they create is not easily produced or felt elsewhere.
At the nearby Heritage Park, big-name entertainers appear in concert and twice a year the biggest rodeo east of the Mississippi River, the Silver Spurs Rodeo, fills its name-sake arena.
Parks and Recreation
An extensive array of parks, facilities, and programs are maintained through the City's Parks and Recreation Department. Existing recreational amenities include two gyms, six lighted Little League baseball and softball fields, a skate park, a BMX track, junior Olympic size pool, soccer complex with four fields, 10 neighborhood parks, 18-court horseshoe complex, shuffleboard, and senior center. To this add the new Water Tower Park, a beautiful neighborhood park with a basketball court, playground, swings, ball field, walking path, and restrooms, located on the south side of town.
A popular outdoor amenity in St. Cloud is the Lakefront Park on East Lake Tohopekaliga. Lakefront Park is the site of many community events and is well known for its white sand beach, shaded picnic tables, and two miles of paved pathways for walking, biking or inline skating. In addition to the Lakefront, residents can enjoy a refreshing taste of Mother Nature at both Peghorn Nature Park and Chisholm Park. Both venues offer hiking trails and picnic areas. Additionally, Chisholm Park offers a beach and swimming area, volleyball nets, a playground, and a public boat ramp providing access to East Lake.
St. Cloud is also close to all the Orlando Universal and Disney area attractions making the a great adventure for when the family comes to visit.
Medical Facilities
St. Cloud Lakefront Park, some two-and-a-half miles long, makes for a great workout for runners, walkers, cyclists and the family’s four-legged members. Quality of life begins with good health and St. Cloud can provide its residents with lots of options to maintain or regain good health. Soon to be completed in 2012 at “Medical City,” a development less than 20 minutes from St. Cloud, are two major hospital facilities. A new Veterans Administration Hospital will service the many veterans of Central Florida and Nemours Children Hospital, one of the premier pediatric health care systems in the nation, will care for critically ill children. Several advanced medical research companies are part of “Medical City,” such as Sanford Burnham Institute. Further strengthening the medical needs are the establishment of a new University of Central Florida medical school and a dental school at “Medical City.”
History
St. Cloud, a midsize, family-oriented city near Orlando, was founded on April 16, 1909, as a retirement community for Civil War Union veterans who paid $50 for five-acre lots. The birth of modern day St. Cloud is possible through the aspirations of several men, including Hamilton Disston, who began visiting Florida from Philadelphia on fishing trips in the 1870s. After positive results from sugarcane at Southport, Disston became interested in its production. He erected the first sugar factory at the St. Cloud Plantation at East Lake Tohopekaliga. A small community developed at Disston’s sugar works and when the plantation was abandoned, a few families stayed on, moving to the location. The Sugar Belt Railway was merged with South Florida Railway and the St. Cloud Plantation was acquired by the Seminole Land and Investment Company (SLIC).
